You are using a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer has multiple video cards installed. When the computer resumes from sleep (S3), the operating system may stop responding.

Note If you are running an application that uses the DirectX kernel driver, a black screen may appear.

This problem occurs because of an error in the DirectX kernel driver. There is a race condition in the DirectX kernel driver that enables graphics card PCI I/O space before the driver restores its PCI configuration space. In this scenario, I/O access to an enabled but not configured PCI device leads to the black screen or crash issues.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

• Service Pack 1 is integrated into Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
• The .manifest files and the .mum files that are installed in each environment are listed separately in the Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista section. These files and their associated .cat (security catalog) files are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The .cat files are signed with a Microsoft digital signature. The attributes of these security files are not listed.
