Restore of a Virtual Machine (VM) using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Generates an Event ID: 6008
RAPID PUBLISHING
Action
When starting a restored Virtual Machine (VM) backed up originally using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), the Guest Operating System inside the VM generates an Event ID: 6008 in the System Event log, The previous system shutdown at time on <date> was unexpected.
Result
Cause
When using VSS to snapshot a running Guest Operating System inside of a Virtual Machine you will receive an Event ID 6008 after completing the restore process. Restoring the Virtual Machine with or without the Hyper V VSS Writer will cause the Event due to the method by which the snapshot was created. As long as the Hyper-V VSS Writer participates in the snapshot the application data inside the Virtual Machine Guest Operating System is consistent and the Event can be ignored. Restoring the Virtual Machine without the Hyper V VSS Writer’s involvement can cause data inconsistencies with the application data inside the Guest Operating System.
Resolution
This is the currently expected behavior. Due to the snapshot of the Guest OS being taken while it was in the running state and the VM being restored in the off-line state the event is generated.
