When you try to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Web Server 2008-based system, the installation is not completed successfully. Additionally, you receive the following warning message:

This problem occurs because the SQL Server 2005 installer was released before the release of Windows Web Server 2008. Therefore, the SQL Server 2005 installer does not expect the Windows Web Server 2008 licensing information. When the installer does not receive the expected results, it blocks the associated installation.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Web Server 2008 service pack that contains this hotfix.
