Symptom

When you try to connect to the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or to connect to the Microsoft Update Web site, you may receive the following error code:

0×80070424

Cause

This issue can occur if a Windows Update or Microsoft Update required service is not registered.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, follow the steps in the methods listed below in the order listed, starting with Method 1.

Method 1: Ensure that the necessary services are available and running

Ensure that the Bits Service, Automatic Update Service and the Workstation Service are installed and running. To do this follow the steps listed below for your operating system.

Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003

To ensure that the necessary services are available and running, follow these steps:

1.       Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2.       Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

4.       Double-click Automatic Updates.

5.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

6.       Double-click Workstation.

7.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

8.       Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

Note: If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of services, click the following link to view the KB article on the Microsoft web site and download the update:

Note: If the Automatic Update Service does not appear in the list of services, follow the steps listed in Method 3:

For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 follow the steps listed below:

To ensure that the necessary services are available and running, follow these steps:

1.       Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and then click services.msc in the programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

2.       Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

4.       Double-click Windows Update.

5.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

6.       Double-click Workstation.

7.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

8.       Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

Note: If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of Services, click the following link to view the KB article on the Microsoft web site and download the update:

Note: If the Windows Update Service does not appear in the list of services, follow the steps listed in Method 3:

Method 2: Register the BITS files, Qmgr.dll and qmgrprxy.dll

Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003

1.       Click Start, click Run, copy and paste or type the following command into the Open box, and then click OK.

regsvr32 Qmgr.dll /s

2.       Repeat  step 1 for the following command:

regsvr32 Qmgrprxy.dll /s

3.       Try to install updates again.

Method 3: Download and install the Windows Update Agent

1.       Download and install the latest Windows Update agent. Click the link below to view the article on the Microsoft web site:

2.       Once the Windows Update agent is installed, try to install updates again.
