Consider the following scenario:

• In Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, you open an e-mail message that has a file attached, such as a Word document.
• You open the Word document, make a change, and then save the changes to the document.

  Note In this case, you are not prompted to select a location for the changed document.

• You close the document, but you do not close Word.

In this scenario, when you try to forward this message, you receive the following error message:

If you click Yes in this message, a new message will be created successfully. Additionally, the document that is attached in this new message contains the changes that you made previously.

To forward the e-mail message that contains the changed attachment and to avoid receiving the error message, install the Outlook 2007 hotfix package that is dated February 24, 2009. Then, set the ExtensionsToExcludeFromTracking registry entry to enable the hotfix. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Install the Outlook 2007 hotfix package that is dated February 24, 2009. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

2. Set the ExtensionsToExcludeFromTracking registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. Start Registry Editor.
      • In Windows Vista, click Start

        , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

        If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.

      • In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
   2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Office 12.0 Outlook Options General
   3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
   4. Type ExtensionsToExcludeFromTracking, and then press ENTER:
   5. Right-click ExtensionsToExcludeFromTracking, and then click Modify.
   6. In the Value data box, type the extensions that you do not want to track, and then click OK.

      Note The extensions that you type inside the Value data box could be a list, such as the following:

      docx;docm;doc;dotx;dotm;dot;xlsx;xlsm;xlsb;xls;xltx;xlt;xlm;pptx;pptm;ppt;pub;xsn;vsd;vss;vst;vdx;vsx;vtx;one

   7. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.
