This issue may occur if the disk is surprise removed.For example, this behavior may occur if you remove the disk without using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area to stop the disk first. Overview

Windows Vista is available in 36 languages. This includes 11 languages that are available in Windows XP only if you use a Windows XP Language Interface Pack. However, you cannot upgrade a Windows XP-based computer that is running one of these packs to a version of Windows Vista that uses one of the new languages. If you try to do this, the Upgrade option is not available. Instead, you must perform a custom installation of Windows Vista or a clean installation of Windows Vista.

This issue occurs if the operating system language in Windows XP does not match the language of the version of Windows Vista that you install. This issue affects the following language versions of Windows XP:

•	Bulgarian
•	Croatian
•	Estonian
•	Latvian
•	Lithuanian
•	Romanian
•	Serbian-Latin
•	Slovak
•	Slovenian
•	Thai
•	Ukrainian

Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition uses Windows XP Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) language packs to support a subset of languages. When you install Windows Vista on a computer that is running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and a language pack, you cannot upgrade the computer to a version of Windows Vista that uses a non-English language. In this scenario, to install a version of Windows Vista that uses a non-English language, you must perform a custom Windows Vista installation or a clean Windows Vista installation. This issue affects the following language versions of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition:

•	Czech
•	Danish
•	Dutch
•	Finnish
•	Hungarian
•	Italian
•	Norwegian
•	Polish
•	Portuguese (Brazil)
•	Portuguese (Portugal)
•	Russian
•	Spanish
•	Swedish
•	Turkish.

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 supports additional languages. However, you cannot upgrade Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Update Rollup 2 to the matching language version of Windows Vista. This issue occurs because the computer runs the English version of Windows Media Center Edition 2005 together with a language pack that provides localized strings. The operating system is in English even though the computer is running a localized language such as Spanish. Because the operating system is in English, you cannot upgrade to a non-English version of Windows Vista. This issue affects the following language versions of Windows Media Center Edition 2005:

•	Traditional Chinese
•	Czech
•	Danish
•	Finnish
•	Norwegian (Bokmål)
•	Polish
•	Portuguese (Portugal)
•	Russian
•	Spanish
•	Swedish
•	Turkish

This issue does not affect the following language versions of Windows Media Center Edition 2005:

Custom installation information

Although you may be unable to upgrade the computer to Windows Vista, you can perform a custom installation of Windows Vista. A custom installation helps preserve the data files from an earlier installation of Windows XP. Consider the following limitations when you perform a custom installation of Windows Vista:

•	You must reinstall all the programs after you install Windows Vista.
•	You cannot preserve Windows XP settings, such as Windows Media Center recording settings. In this scenario, you must reconfigure Windows Vista. This includes setting up Windows Media Center.
•	You must move personal files to an appropriate location in Windows Vista.
•	Windows Easy Transfer is unavailable. Windows Easy Transfer does not let you transfer files and settings between computers if a language difference exists.

Note Although this article describes how to manually restore personal files after you perform a custom installation of Windows Vista, you can also use a third-party backup program to back up the files from Windows XP and then restore them to Windows Vista. Before you do this, we recommend that you make sure that the backup program is compatible with Windows Vista. Also, we recommend that you become familiar with the process to back up and restore files. If you decide to use a third-party backup program to preserve personal files, you may want to also follow the steps in this article to create a second backup copy of the files.

Install Windows Vista

To perform a custom installation of Windows Vista, follow these steps:

1.	Insert the Windows Vista DVD, and then click Install now.
2.	Follow the steps in the installation program until you reach the Which type of installation do you want page. Notice that Upgrade is unavailable.
3.	Click Custom (advanced), click the partition on which you want to install Windows Vista, and then click Next.
4.	When you receive a message that states that the partition contains files from an earlier Windows installation and that these files will be moved to a folder that is named Windows.old, click Next. Then, follow the remaining steps to install Windows Vista.

Locate personal files

The Windows Vista installation program creates the Windows.old folder to store files from the Windows XP installation. To locate the Windows.old folder in Windows Vista, click Start, type drive: windows.old in the Start Search box, and then click Windows.old in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.

You must move personal files from their former folders to the corresponding folders in Windows Vista.

Important We recommend that you do not delete any files or folders until you verify that all the personal files have been successfully restored to Windows Vista.

When a cache entry is committed, the file name is included in the cache entry. Because the CreateFileA() method on the named stream works, the WinInet.dll file does not generate an error. Instead, it uses a random name. Therefore, when the cache entry is retrieved, and the caller tries to open the file, the open operation fails because WinInet.dll file tries to open the FileName file. Instead, the WinInet.dll file must open the FileName:$DATA file.

Therefore, you cannot cache or download content when the Content-Disposition file name token contains a file name that uses one of the special characters that are listed in the Symptoms section. The new version of the WinInet.dll file resolves this problem by checking for these characters and replacing them with an underscore character.

Notes

•	File compression in DFSR uses the XPRESS compression format in the DFSR staging area. XPRESS compression differs from Remote Differential Compression (RDC). RDC uses over-the-wire delta replication of file blocks.
•	Generally, it is not useful to perform additional compression on files that are already compressed.

You can prevent the compression of specific file types by using the msDFSR-DefaultCompressionExclusionFilter attribute. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start, type adsiedit.msc in the Start Search box, right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
2.	In the ADSI Edit snap-in, expand the domain node.
3.	Locate a DFSR content set. For example, locate the following: CN=SYSVOL Share,CN=Content,CN=Domain System Volume,CN=DFSR-GlobalSettings,CN=System,CN=Domain name,CN=com
4.	Right-click CN=SYSVOL Share, and then click Properties.
5.	Click the msDFSR-DefaultCompressionExclusionFilter attribute, and then click Edit.
6.	In the Value box, type a comma-separated list of file name extensions that you do not want to be compressed when DFSR stages a file. For example, type the following: wma,wmv,zip,jpg,mpg,mpeg,m1v,mp2,mp3,mpa,cab,wav,snd,au,asf,wm, avi,z,gz,tgz,frx,dcm Note This list contains the hard-coded list of extensions and the .dcm file type. A .dcm file is a compressed medical image file.
7.	Click OK two times.
8.	Close the ADSI Edit snap-in.

All files that have an extension that is listed in the msDFSR-DefaultCompressionExclusionFilter attribute will no longer be compressed in the staging directory.

If the msDFSR-DefaultCompressionExclusionFilter attribute is configured as <Not Set>, the default hard-coded extension list will be used from Windows Server 2003 R2. If you make any changes to the attribute, the default exclusion list is completely ignored.

Note Always include the default exclusion list when you customize the settings.

Step 3: Insert the Windows Vista DVD into the DVD drive

a.	Insert the Windows Vista DVD into the DVD drive , and then close the drive tray.
b.	Wait a moment for the Setup program to start automatically.

Step 4: Click Install Now

When the Setup program starts, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.

If the Setup program does not start automatically, follow these steps:

a.	Click Start, click Run, type Drive: setup.exe, and then click OK. Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer’s DVD drive.
b.	Click Install Now.

Note When you are prompted with the Get important updates for installation message, click Go Online.

Step 5: Use the Upgrade option to finish the installation

When the Which type of installation do you want? screen appears, click Upgrade. Then, follow the instructions to install Windows Vista.

How to troubleshoot the Upgrade has been disabled message

When you try to upgrade to Windows Vista, the Upgrade option may be unavailable. If this issue occurs, you receive the following message:

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

•	You cannot upgrade the operating system to Windows Vista. (Not every Windows operating system can be upgraded to Windows Vista.)
•	You did not start the computer by using the current operating system. Instead, you started the computer from the Windows Vista DVD. To resolve this issue, start the computer by using the current operating system. Then, run the Setup program.
•	The operating system is installed on a partition that uses the FAT32 file system. To resolve this issue, convert the file system on the partition to use the NTFS file system. Out-of-grace reduced functionality mode

Windows Vista enters out-of-grace reduced functionality mode if one of the following conditions is true:

Â	On a retail copy of Windows Vista • You do not activate Windows Vista within 30 days after you install Windows Vista. • You do not reactivate Windows Vista within three days after you replace a major hardware component in the computer.
Â	On an OEM copy of Windows Vista • You do not activate Windows Vista within three days after you change the computer motherboard to a non-OEM motherboard.
Â	On a corporate or enterprise version of Windows Vista that uses the Key Manager Service (KMS) • You do not activate Windows Vista within 30 days after you install Windows Vista. • You do not renew the Windows Vista activation within 210 days of an earlier Windows Vista activation. • You do not activate Windows Vista within 30 days after you replace the hard disk drive of the computer.
Â	On a corporate or enterprise version of Windows Vista that uses a Multiple Activation Key (MAK) • You do not activate Windows Vista within 30 days after you install Windows Vista. • You do not reactivate Windows Vista within 30 days after you replace a major hardware component in the computer.

Activities that are available

If Windows Vista is running in out-of-grace reduced functionality mode, you can perform the following actions:

•	Activate Windows Vista You can activate the Windows Vista product key.
•	Remotely script Windows Vista You can use Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to run scripts on the computer from a remote location.
•	Change the product key You can change the Windows Vista product key.
Â	Log on for one hour • You can log on to Windows Vista for one hour to obtain a new product key or to access data on the local computer. • You can use most of the features that are available in Windows Vista. • You can activate the Windows Vista product key. • You can remotely access a shared network location.
•	Remain logged on If you are already logged on to Windows Vista, you can remain logged on. Windows Vista does not log you off the computer.
•	Run Windows Vista in safe mode You can start the computer to safe mode in Windows Vista to access local data. Windows Vista does not log you off the computer.

Activities that are unavailable

If Windows Vista is running in out-of-grace reduced functionality mode, you cannot perform the following actions:

•	Play built-in games The games that are included with Windows Vista are unavailable in reduced functionality mode.
•	Use premium features Windows Vista premium features such as Aero Glass, ReadyBoost, and BitLocker are unavailable in reduced functionality mode.
•	Log on for more than one hour In reduced functionality mode, you can only remain logged on to Windows Vista for one hour.

Non-genuine reduced functionality mode

Windows Vista enters non-genuine reduced functionality mode if one of the following conditions is true:

•	The WGA program detects a blocked product key or a counterfeit product key.
•	The WGA program detects incorrect activation binary files or modified activation binary files.
•	Windows Vista is in out-of-grace reduced functionality mode.

Activities that are available

If Windows Vista is running in non-genuine reduced functionality mode, you can perform the following actions:

•	Use Windows Vista features You can use most of the features that are available in Windows Vista.
•	Activate Windows Vista You can activate the Windows Vista product key.
•	Change the product key You can change the Windows Vista product key.
•	Log on without a time constraint to perform certain activities You can log on to Windows Vista without a one-hour restriction to obtain a new product key or to access local data.

Activities that are unavailable

If Windows Vista is running in non-genuine reduced functionality mode, you cannot perform the following actions:

•	Use certain Windows Vista features Aero Glass and the Windows ReadyBoost features that are included with Windows Vista are unavailable in reduced functionality mode.
•	Obtain some content from Microsoft Premium content from the Microsoft Download center is unavailable in reduced functionality mode.

Back up and remove folders that contain files for other operating systems

To successfully install Windows Vista, you must also remove any folders that contain files of other operating systems. If any important files are stored in these folders, back up the folders first. For example, back up the folders to a CD or to an external drive. Or, move the folders to another partition on the same physical drive. For example, move the folders from drive C to drive D.

The folder that contains an operating system’s files appears in the Boot.ini file. For example, in step 3, the folder that contains the files for Microsoft Windows 2000 is the WINDOWS folder.
