Consider this scenario. You use redirected folders in GPO or map a network path in a logon script and you make folders available offline in Windows Vista.  Some files may not be synchronized or you can open the files but cannot save them.

This behavior occurs under, but is not limited to, the following conditions:

 

The CSC Cache was corrupted because the Sync Center starts to synchronize the files and does not stopping even if you do not have the necessary permissions on the network path. Some files are synchronized, but you cannot make changes to the files. The Sync Center does not check the permissions on the root folder of a share that is mapped with deep net use. For example, permissions on the userhome folder for the mapping server userhome userhomedir are not checked.

1.       Make sure that users have the necessary permissions on the network path and the folders.  In the example that was mentioned earlier the user needs “List Folder /Read” permission for the userhome folder.

2.       Reinitialize the CSC Cache, as described in the following section.

To reinitialize the offline folder cache in Windows Vista, follow these steps:

1.       Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

2.       Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services Csc Parameters

Note If the Parameters subkey does not exist, create it.  To do this, follow these steps:

a.       Click the following registry subkey:

b.      On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.

c.       Type Parameters, and then press ENTER.

3.       On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORDValue.

4.       Type FormatDatabase, and then press ENTER.

5.       On the Edit menu, click Modify.

6.       Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

7.       Exit Registry Editor

8.       Restart the computer.

Method 1: Verify that the partition is compatible with Windows Vista

You cannot install Windows Vista on a FAT32 partition. Additionally, you must correctly configure dynamic disks for use with Windows Vista. To verify that the partition is compatible with Windows Vista, follow these steps:

1.

For a dynamic disk that has a simple volume, use the Diskpart.exe utility to configure the disk as an active disk. For a FAT32 partition, reformat the partition, or convert the partition to an NTFS file system partition by using the Convert.exe command. Note When you format a partition, all data is removed from the partition. This data includes all the files on the partition. Method 2: Update the drivers for the hard disk controller

If you want to install Windows Vista as an upgrade, update the drivers for the hard disk controller to the latest drivers.

Note Windows Vista Setup provides a feature to migrate current drivers to the new operating system. Therefore, Windows Vista Setup may use the drivers that are currently installed on the computer. If the computer does not have the latest drivers installed, the Setup program may use the outdated drivers. In this case, you may experience compatibility problems.

Method 3: Provide the correct drivers for the hard disk controller

If you are trying to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista, you must provide the correct drivers for the hard disk controller. When you are prompted to select the disk on which to install Window Vista, you must also click to select the Load Driver option. Windows Vista Setup will guide you through the rest of the process.

Method 4: Examine the Setupact.log file to verify that the partition is active

If you receive the following error message, verify that the partition is active by examining the Setupact.log file:

•	If you install Windows Vista as an upgrade, the Setupact.log file is located in the Drive: $WINDOWS.~BT Sources Panther folder. Drive represents the drive that contains the existing Windows installation.
•	If you perform a clean installation of Windows Vista, the Setupact.log file is located in the Drive: $WINDOWS Sources Panther folder. Drive represents the DVD drive that contains the Windows Vista Setup files.

To verify that the partition is active, follow these steps:

1.	Insert the DVD into the DVD drive.
2.	On the disk selection screen, press SHIFT+F10. A Command Prompt (CMD) window opens.
3.	Change the directory to locate the Setupact.log file, and then open the Setupact.log file.
4.	Locate the DumpDiskInformation section. This section contains information about partition mapping.
5.	In the DumpDiskInformation section, locate the log entry that resembles the following. Disk [0] partition [1] is an active partition
6.	If this log entry appears after an entry that resembles the following, the hard disk may not be configured to use a Windows-based operating system. Unknown In this case, use the Diskpart.exe utility to configure a different partition as active. Note This step prevents a third-party operating system from starting.
7.	Close the Command Prompt window.

Method 5: Check for firmware updates and for system BIOS updates

Run the Chkdsk.exe utility to check for disk problems. Replace the hard disk if it is damaged.

Method 8: Use the Diskpart.exe utility to clean the disk, and then run Windows Vista Setup again

If you have tried all the methods that are listed in this section and the problem persists, use the Diskpart.exe utility to clean the disk, and then run Windows Vista Setup again.

Note Use this method only if you want to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista. When you clean the hard disk, it is formatted. All partitions and all data on the hard disk are permanently removed. We strongly recommend that you back up the files on the hard disk before you clean the disk.

To use the Diskpart.exe utility to clean the hard disk, follow these steps:

1.	Insert the DVD into the DVD drive.
2.	On the disk selection screen, press SHIFT+F10. A Command Prompt window opens.
3.	Type diskpart, and then press ENTER to open the diskpart tool.
4.	Type list disk, and then press ENTER. A list of available hard disks is displayed.
5.	Type sel disk number, and then press ENTER. number is the number of the hard disk that you want to clean. The hard disk is now selected.
6.	Type det disk, and then press ENTER. A list of partitions on the hard disk is displayed. Use this information to verify that the correct disk is selected.
7.	Make sure that the disk does not contain required data, type clean all, and then press ENTER to clean the disk. All the partitions and all the data on the disk is permanently removed.
8.	Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the diskpart tool.
9.	Close the Command Prompt window.
10.	Click the Refresh button to update the disk selection screen. This step lists the disk.
11.	Run Windows Vista Setup to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista.

2.	Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services Tcpip Parameters Interfaces {GUID} In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
3.	On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4.	In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
5.	Right-click DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
6.	In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7.	Close Registry Editor.

Known issues with this security update

• When you install this security update on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you may have to restart the computer two times to complete the installation. This issue may occur if you install an XML Core Services 4.0–based update together with an update that contains inbox drivers. For example, the following updates contain inbox drivers:
  956697  (/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=956697/ ) Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V VSS writer is not used during a backup job because of corrupted or invalid virtual machine configuration files
  938371  (/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=938371/ ) A software update is available for the Windows Vista installation components

  This issue occurs because Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI)-based installations will not continue while inbox drivers are updating. This is because inbox drivers set the impactful transaction flag and the reboot required flag at the servicing stack level for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.   3. Repair the previous installation of MSXML 4.0 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.

  The earlier versions of the Msxml4.dll file and of the Msxml4r.dll file are restored to the side-by-side folder and to the %SystemRoot% System32 folder.

Note If the computer is not connected to the Internet, the Windows Time Service cannot adjust the time automatically. Therefore, a small time loss may be noticed even if you install hotfix 929637. To work around this problem if the computer is not connected to the Internet, disable the Windows Time Service. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then click services.msc in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2.	Double-click Windows Time.
3.	Click Stop.
4.	Select Disabled in the Startup type box.
5.	Click Apply.

When you disable the Windows Time Service, the small time loss does not occur. However, we do not recommend that you disable the Windows Time service in an environment where the computer is connected to the Internet. When an Internet connection is available, Windows will contact a network time protocol server (NTP) to update the system clock.
