Update details

The Office 2004 for Mac 11.4.2 Update contains several changes that improve security and stability. These changes include fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer’s memory by using malicious code.

Prerequisites

Before you install the Office 2004 for Mac 11.4.2 Update, make sure that the computer is running Mac OS X 10.2.8 (Jaguar) or a later version of the Mac OS X operating system.

To verify that the computer meets this prerequisite, click About This Mac on the Apple menu.

Additionally, the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.4.1 Update must be installed on the computer before you install the Office 2004 for Mac 11.4.2 Update. To verify that the Office 2004 for Mac 11.4.1 Update is installed, follow these steps:

2.	Open the Microsoft Office 2004 folder, and then open the Office folder.

Known issues with this security update

• When you install this security update on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you may have to restart the computer two times to complete the installation. This issue may occur if you install an XML Core Services 4.0–based update together with an update that contains inbox drivers. For example, the following updates contain inbox drivers:
  956697  (/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=956697/ ) Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V VSS writer is not used during a backup job because of corrupted or invalid virtual machine configuration files
  938371  (/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=938371/ ) A software update is available for the Windows Vista installation components

  This issue occurs because Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI)-based installations will not continue while inbox drivers are updating. This is because inbox drivers set the impactful transaction flag and the reboot required flag at the servicing stack level for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Therefore, the update for XML Core Services 4.0 will fail during installation if an update that contains an inbox driver is applied first. After the inbox driver has installed, and then the computer is restarted, the installation of security update for XML Core Services 4.0 will succeed. However, an additional restart is required to complete the installation.

  To avoid this issue, install the security update for XML Core Services 4.0 before you install the update that contains inbox drivers.

• This security update may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft Update or on Windows Update if one of the system files is corrupted or if it has not been updated correctly.For more information about this issue, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  An update is available that improves the compatibility and the reliability of Microsoft XML Core Service 4.0 Service Pack 2 on a Windows Vista-based computer

• The following security updates do not support the complete removal of MSXML 4.0:
  • Security update 954430 for Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.0
  • Security update 936181 for Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.0
  • Security update 936181 for MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Security update 936181 for MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

  This situation occurs because this version of MSXML is installed in side-by-side mode. To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Remove security update 954430 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.
  2. Delete the Msxml4.dll file from the %SystemRoot% System32 folder.
  3. Repair the previous installation of MSXML 4.0 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.

  The earlier versions of the Msxml4.dll file and of the Msxml4r.dll file are restored to the side-by-side folder and to the %SystemRoot% System32 folder.

• You may receive the following error message when you install security update 954430 from Windows Update:
  Could not register type library for file c: Windows system32 msxml4.dll. Contact your support personnel.

  When this error occurs, you may also notice information that resembles the following in the log file:

  Error 1911. Could not register type library for file c: Windows system32 msxml4.dll. Contact your support personnel.

  To work around this problem, manually install the security update from the Microsoft Download Center, and then click Ignore when the error message is displayed. To confirm that the installation was successful, verify that the version of the Msxml4.dll file in the %SystemRoot% System32 folder is 4.20.9870.0.

Resolution 1

To resolve this issue, you must create a CNAME record that points to a name that has a registered SPN. To do this, follow these steps.

Check the registered SPNs for the SharePoint server

Create a CNAME record on the Domain Name System (DNS) server

On the server that is running the DNS service in the domain, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
2.	In the Navigation pane, expand Forward Lookup Zones, and then click the node for the required domain. For example, click mydomain.contoso.com.
3.	In the Details pane, right-click an empty area, and then click New Alias (CNAME).
4.	In the Alias Name (uses parent domain if left blank) box, type the Alias_Name that you noted in the Check the registered SPNs for the SharePoint server section. For example, type My_SharePoint_Site.
5.	In the Fully Qualified domain name (FQDN) for the host box, type an appropriate name. For example, type SharePoint_Server.mydomain.contoso.com.
6.	Click OK.

Resolution 2

To resolve this issue, you must configure anonymous access for the Web application, for the site collection, and for the resource to which the RSS feed points. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Enable anonymous access for the Web application.To do this follow these steps: a. Start SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, and then click Application Management. b. Under Application Security, click Authentication providers. c. In the Web Application box, click the arrow, click Change Web Application, and then click the Web application that you want. d. Under the Zone heading, click Default to open the Edit Authentication page. e. On the Edit Authentication page, click to select the Enable anonymous access check box, and then clickSave.
2.	Enable anonymous access for the site collection. To do this, follow these steps: a. Open the site collection that is hosted in the Web application in the browser. b. Click Site Actions, and then click Site Settings. c. Under Users and Permissions, click Advanced permissions. d. Click Settings, and then click Anonymous Access. e. Click Lists and libraries, and then click OK.
3.	Enable anonymous access for the resource. To do this, follow these steps. Note Step 3 is applicable only if the resource does not inherit permissions from the parent node. a. In the Web application in which anonymous access is enabled, click View All Site Content. b. Click the resource list that you want. c. Click Settings, and then click the settings command that is related to your resource list. For example, click Document Library Settings if your resource is a Document Library. d. Under Permissions and Management, click the entry that modifies permissions for the affected resource. For example, click Permissions for this document library. e. Click Settings, and then click Anonymous Access. f. Click the appropriate user rights, and then click OK. For example, click View items, and then click OK.

Can I use SMS or System Center Configuration Manager to determine whether the updates are required?

Yes. SMS helps detect and deploy these security updates. SMS 2.0 together with the SUS Feature Pack and SMS 2003 together with SUSFP use MBSA version 1.2.1 technology for detection. Therefore, SMS 2.0 together with the SUS Feature Pack and SMS 2003 together with the SUS Feature Pack have limitations that resemble the limitations of MBSA version 1.2.1.

The ifType value is a member of the data structures of the network stack. Also, the ifType value is a member of many APIs.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has defined and standardized the values of the different NDIS network interface types. The IANA standard includes the following type definitions.

By default, when the remote access service creates a PPP network interface or a VPN tunnel interface in Windows Vista, both interface types are registered in the network stack. This occurs by using the IF_TYPE_PPP value. Functions that use the ifType value return the same ifType value for both a PPP interface and a tunnel interface.

Examples of functions that use the ifType value include the following:

•	GetAdaptersAddresses
•	GetAdaptersInfo

You cannot determine whether an interface is a PPP type or a tunnel type by using only the ifType value. This problem occurs whenever a remote access connection is created.

Issue that the hotfix package fixes

Consider the following scenario. On a computer that has the East Asian languages enabled, you have a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document. The document contains numbers that are enclosed in parentheses. Some numbers are used to number a list. You open the document in Microsoft Office Word 2007. In this scenario, you may experience a delay of 1 second to 5 seconds after you type a character in the last line of the numbered list.

Note You do not experience a delay when you type successive characters.

In this scenario, the workflow displays the following message:

Note This metadata page problem is not exclusive to a picture library. This problem may also occur if you allow for management of content types on any other library, regardless of what content types are enabled. Additionally, adding certain columns to other library types, such as a document library, can cause this problem to occur.

When you click OK on the metadata entry page, the workflow sees this action as a change to the item. This unintended change to the item causes the workflow rule to cancel the workflow when the Cancel this workflow when the: Document is changed rule is enabled.

After you change these settings, a CheckIn button appears instead of an OK button on the metadata entry page when a picture item is uploaded. The CheckIn button does not cause the workflow to be canceled upon upload. This button still allows for successive change to the picture item to cancel the workflow as intended.

You can also work around this problem by clicking Cancel on the metadata page. By clicking Cancel, you receive the effect that you want on the workflow. However, this is not intuitive to the upload process and does not let the user add metadata during upload.

Another way to work around this problem is to click Upload or Upload Multiple Pictures. When you click one of these buttons, the metadata does not appear during the upload process.

In this scenario, when you open the PDF file or the XPS file, the text is right-aligned. Additionally, if a dash appears in the text, the text that appears before the dash is right-aligned. However, the text after the dash is left-aligned. Therefore, a large blank space appears in the text.

•	Windows Memory Tester Set this entry to point to the system partition. To do this, type the following command at the elevated command prompt: bcdedit -set {memdiag} device partition=S: Note In this command, S: represents the drive letter for the system partition.
•	Resume from Hibernate Set this entry to point to the operating system partition. This partition is also known as the boot partition. To do this, follow these steps: 1. At the elevated command prompt, type bcdedit -enum all. Note the identifier value for the Resume from Hibernate entry. 2. At the elevated command prompt, type bcdedit -set {identifier} device partition=C:. Note In this command, identifier represents the identifier value for the Resume from Hibernate entry in step 1 of this procedure. Also, C: represents the drive letter for the boot partition.
