Consider the following scenario on a Windows Vista Tablet PC-based computer:

• You extend the desktop to an external monitor.
• You set the external monitor as the main monitor.
• You shut down the Windows Vista Tablet PC-based computer.
• You detach the external monitor from the Windows Vista Tablet PC-based computer.

In this scenario, when you restart the operating system, and you use the built-in monitor, you may find that the tablet pen does not work.

This problem occurs because the Tablet Input Service crashes. After you detach the external monitor that you set as the main monitor, the Tablet Input Service does not reinitialize the monitor information when the system restarts. Additionally, the Tablet Input Service does not handle correctly an exception that the crash causes. Therefore, an access violation in the Tablet Input Service occurs, and the tablet pen does not work.

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
