SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario:
| • | You make a remote procedure call (RPC) request on a Windows-based client to connect to an RPC server. |
| • | The RPC server is running Windows Server 2008. |
| • | The RPC server function runs an RPC client callback function on the RPC server. |
In this scenario, a memory leak occurs on the RPC server.
Back to the topCAUSE
The issue occurs because of a bug in the Rpcrt4.dll file. When an RPC client makes a call to an RPC server function, the RPC server function runs an RPC callback function that cannot free the callback reply buffer. This behavior causes a memory leak on the RPC server.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2008 Service Pack that contains this hotfix.
