SYMPTOMS

When you modify the AutoShareServer registry value on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you are prompted to restart the computer for the change to take effect:

Note When you change the AutoShareServer registry value on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you do not have to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

The AutoShareServer value resides in the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services LanmanServer Parameters AutoShareServer

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Srvnet service in Windows Server 2008 does not stop automatically when the Server service stops.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
• Manually stop the Srvnet service after you modify the registry value. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
2. At the command prompt, type net stop srvnet, and then press ENTER.

Note When you are prompted, type y, and then press ENTER to stop the services that depend on the Srvnet service.

3. Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.
• Restart the computer.
